Home buying is 12% more expensive than just a month ago. Fast-rising mortgage rates\u2014up one percentage point in September alone\u2014have added an extra $250 more onto monthly mortgage payments over the past month, Nadia Evangelou, senior economist and director of forecasting, writes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.realtor\/blogs\/economists-outlook\/instant-reaction-mortgage-rates-september-29-2022\">the National Association of REALTORS\u00ae blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The higher rates are prompting the housing market to drastically slow: <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.realtor\/daily-news\/2022\/09\/28\/nar-decade-high-rates-deeply-cut-into-contract-signings\">Pending home sales fell 24% last month<\/a> compared to last year, and <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.realtor\/daily-news\/2022\/09\/21\/existing-home-sales-slip-again-yun-blames-mortgage-rates\">existing-home sales were down 20% annually in August<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freddie Mac reports the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.70% this week. That is up from 3.01% a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe uncertainty and volatility in financial markets is heavily impacting mortgage rates,\u201d says Sam Khater, Freddie Mac\u2019s chief economist. He adds that home shoppers would be wise to shop around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur survey indicates that the range of weekly rate quotes for the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage has more than doubled over the last year,\u201d he notes. \u201cThis means that for the typical mortgage amount, a borrower who locked-in at the higher end of the range would pay several hundred dollars more than a borrower who locked-in at the lower end of the range. The large dispersion in rates means it has become even more important for home buyers to shop around with different lenders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mortgage Rate Averages For This Week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freddie Mac reports the following national averages with mortgage rates for the week ending Sept. 29:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>30-year fixed-rate mortgages:<\/strong> averaged 6.70%, with an average 0.9 point, rising from last week\u2019s 6.29% average. Last year at this time, 30-year rates averaged 3.01%.<\/li><li><strong>15-year fixed-rate mortgages:<\/strong> averaged 5.96%, with an average 1.3 point, increasing from last week\u2019s 5.44% average. A year ago, 15-year rates averaged 2.28%.<\/li><li><strong>5-year hybrid adjustable-rate mortgages<\/strong>: averaged 5.30%, with an average 0.4 point, rising from last week\u2019s 4.97% average.
