Home Owners\u2019 Biggest Fear<\/p><\/div>\n

Seventy-five percent of Americans say they are concerned about losing housing, according to a survey conducted by The NHP Foundation, a not-for-profit provider of affordable housing. Their concerns stem from a fear of losing a job, perceived lack of affordable options, rising rental costs, and retirement.<\/p>\n

\u201cJob loss is the top concern to those who fear losing their housing; the two go hand-in-hand,\u201d says The NHP Foundation\u2019s CEO Dick Burns.<\/p>\n

About 1,000 Americans were polled and asked how concerned they or a friend or a relative were about losing housing: 30 percent of them said they were \u201cvery concerned,\u201d 27 percent were \u201cconcerned,\u201d and 19 percent were \u201csomewhat concerned.\u201d Eighty-three percent of those surveyed say that most of their concerns stem from housing costs.<\/p>\n

Indeed, 65 percent of respondents say they feel \u201ccost-burdened,\u201d devoting more than 30 percent of their incomes to paying housing costs.<\/p>\n

Eighty percent of respondents say they would welcome more affordable housing in their communities, while 20 percent said they would not.<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t, Burns believes it\u2019s because of an \u201coutdated concept of affordable housing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s affordable housing is comprised of new and upgraded garden apartments and high-rises; amenity-laden developments that look nothing like \u2018projects\u2019 of the past,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
