Kevin Brown: Leading Real Estate with Purpose, History, and Heart

Kevin Brown’s journey to becoming President of the National Association of REALTORS® is rooted in more than professional success — it’s shaped by family, resilience, and a deep belief in the power of homeownership. His story reflects a lifetime of hard work and a commitment to creating opportunity, not just for REALTORS®, but for families across the country.

Brown’s family history plays a major role in who he is today. His maternal great-grandparents were enslaved in Mississippi, and both of his parents grew up facing serious financial and social challenges. Despite those obstacles, they believed strongly in education, discipline, and perseverance. Those values were passed down and became the foundation of Brown’s outlook on life and leadership.

As a child, Brown experienced firsthand what it meant to push boundaries. Along with his older brother, he became one of the first Black students to attend an all-white school in Piedmont, California. The experience wasn’t easy, but it taught him resilience, accountability, and the importance of fairness — lessons that continue to guide him today.

Brown’s path into real estate began in the late 1970s when he joined his father’s brokerage. What started as a career move quickly became a calling. Under his father’s guidance, Brown learned that real estate isn’t just about sales — it’s about building long-term stability and generational wealth. One lesson stuck with him: commissions pay the bills, but investments build the future. Brown took that advice seriously and went on to invest in thousands of housing units over the course of his career.

Beyond building a successful business, Brown became deeply involved in advocacy. He saw how government policy, taxes, and housing regulations directly affect homeowners and real estate professionals. Over time, he took on leadership roles at the local, state, and national levels, advocating for fair housing policies, property rights, and access to homeownership. He has testified before lawmakers and worked on issues ranging from flood insurance to housing finance — always with the goal of protecting both consumers and REALTORS®.

As president, Brown’s leadership philosophy is focused and practical. His goal is to help REALTORS® succeed in a changing market by strengthening advocacy, improving access to tools and information, and removing unnecessary barriers to homeownership. He believes that when REALTORS® are supported, communities benefit.

At his core, Kevin Brown leads with purpose. His story is a reminder that real estate is more than a profession — it’s a pathway to opportunity, stability, and generational change.
