{"id":22937,"date":"2023-11-15T16:43:22","date_gmt":"2023-11-15T16:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.anthonydidonato.net\/wordpress\/?p=22937"},"modified":"2023-11-15T16:43:23","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T16:43:23","slug":"spotlight-on-fair-housing-at-nars-annual-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.anthonydidonato.net\/wordpress\/spotlight-on-fair-housing-at-nars-annual-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotlight on Fair Housing at NAR\u2019s Annual Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Implicit bias and the historically difficult path to homeownership for communities of color will be highlighted at the REALTORS\u00ae Conference &amp; Expo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Association of REALTORS\u00ae\u2019 fair housing team will present two sessions at the <a href=\"https:\/\/conference.realtor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2021 REALTORS\u00ae Conference &amp; Expo(link is external)<\/a> that offer attendees the opportunity to explore the history of racial discrimination in real estate and to examine and overcome their own hidden biases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBias Override: Overcoming Barriers to Fair Housing,\u201d new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.realtor\/newsroom\/op-eds-and-letters-to-the-editor\/nar-unveils-implicit-bias-training-for-realtors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">implicit bias<\/a> classroom training that will be offered next year by NAR, helps real estate professionals learn tactics to interrupt stereotypical thinking so that they can provide equal professional service to every prospect or client. A preview of the training, presented by <a href=\"https:\/\/perception.org\/staff\/afua-addo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afua Addo(link is external)<\/a>, deputy director of programs and training at the <a href=\"https:\/\/perception.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Perception Institute(link is external)<\/a>, will engage participants in exercises to build new habits of equitable behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course, which expands on the 50-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.realtor\/videos\/bias-override-overcoming-barriers-to-fair-housing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">implicit bias training video<\/a> released by NAR in 2020, was piloted in New York, Washington, and Texas this summer. It aims to help real estate professionals explore the assumptions they don\u2019t know they\u2019re making, examine their ideas about people from other identity groups, and learn how to be more comfortable working across lines of difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three-hour classroom course will qualify for CE credit and will be offered by the Center for REALTOR\u00ae Development and taught by experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nar.realtor\/education\/designations-and-certifications\/at-home-with-diversity-ahwd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">At Home With Diversity<\/a> instructors. Any REALTOR\u00ae association that is a licensed provider of CRD content will be eligible to provide the training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Past and Future of Family Properties: Overcoming Real Estate\u2019s Historic Harms to Communities of Color\u201d session will feature <a href=\"https:\/\/sasn.rutgers.edu\/about-us\/faculty-staff\/beryl-satter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Beryl Satter(link is external)<\/a>, professor of history at Rutgers University, who tells a deeply personal story of the ways Black Americans in 1960s Chicago were not only excluded from building intergenerational wealth through homeownership but also preyed upon by unscrupulous real estate operators who drained billions of dollars from their community. Dr. Satter\u2019s father was a lawyer who owned rental properties and defended Black clients from these practices.
